Visiting the American Museum of Natural History: What to Know Before You Go

Over the weekend, I finally visited the American Museum of Natural History, and I can't believe it took me this long. I'd heard so many great things about it over the years, and since I'm on a mission to visit as many museums in New York City as possible, I decided it was finally time to check it out.

One of the best surprises had nothing to do with the exhibits—it was the price. Thanks to Culture Pass, I was able to reserve a free ticket using my Brooklyn Public Library card. If you're a New York City resident with a library card from the Brooklyn Public Library, Queens Public Library, or The New York Public Library, definitely check Culture Pass before purchasing your ticket.

As soon as I walked inside, I was greeted by towering dinosaur fossils before making my way into the African Mammals Hall. It was the perfect introduction to the museum and immediately made me realize this wasn't going to be a quick visit.

I originally thought I'd spend about two hours exploring, but nearly four hours later, I was still wandering through exhibits. Every hallway seemed to lead somewhere completely different. One moment I was standing beneath the famous blue whale, and the next I was admiring sparkling gemstones or walking through lifelike wildlife exhibits.

My favorite thing about the museum was that I never felt rushed. Museums are one of my favorite solo activities because I can spend as much time as I want reading exhibits or simply wandering wherever my curiosity takes me. That's exactly what makes this museum such a great experience for solo travelers, while still being just as enjoyable for families and couples.

If it's your first visit, these are the exhibits I wouldn't miss.

🦖 The Fossil Halls

The dinosaur halls are easily some of the most popular exhibits in the museum, and for good reason. Standing beneath the Tyrannosaurus rex and the massive Titanosaur makes you realize just how incredible these creatures were. Even if you've seen dinosaur skeletons before, the scale of these exhibits is impressive.

🐋 Milstein Hall of Ocean Life

This ended up being my favorite gallery. The famous 94-foot-long blue whale suspended from the ceiling is one of those New York attractions that actually lives up to the photos. It's much larger than I imagined, and it's worth taking a few minutes just to stand there and take it all in.

🌌 Rose Center for Earth and Space

If you're interested in astronomy or space exploration, don't skip this section. The exhibits are interactive, beautifully designed, and make learning about the universe surprisingly fun.

🦁 Wildlife Dioramas

These classic exhibits showcase animals from around the world in incredibly detailed natural habitats. They may be some of the oldest galleries in the museum, but they're still some of the most impressive.

Who Is This Museum Best For?

The American Museum of Natural History is one of those rare attractions that truly has something for everyone.

If you're traveling solo, it's one of the best museums in New York City because you can explore entirely at your own pace. Families will love the dinosaur fossils, ocean life exhibits, and interactive displays, while couples can easily spend a relaxing afternoon wandering through the galleries together.

It's also a fantastic choice if you're visiting New York on a rainy day or simply want a break from walking around the city.

Before You Go

A little planning will make your visit even better.

I recommend reserving your tickets ahead of time, especially if you're visiting during weekends, holidays, or school breaks. If you're eligible for Culture Pass, check there first before purchasing admission.

Wear comfortable shoes because you'll be covering a lot of ground. I also suggest downloading or screenshotting your tickets before arriving so they're easy to access. Most importantly, don't try to see everything. The museum is simply too large for one visit. Pick the exhibits you're most excited about, take your time, and enjoy the experience instead of rushing from gallery to gallery.

What's Nearby?

One of the best things about visiting the museum is its location. Since you're already on the Upper West Side, it's easy to turn your museum visit into a full day of exploring.

After leaving the museum, head across the street into Central Park for a relaxing walk. You can visit Belvedere Castle, stroll around Turtle Pond, or simply enjoy one of the park's quieter paths.

If you're hungry, Columbus Avenue is filled with cafés and restaurants, and if you have a sweet tooth as I do, I highly recommend stopping by Levain Bakery for one of their famous cookies. You can also spend some time in Theodore Roosevelt Park right outside the museum or continue your museum day with a visit to the nearby New-York Historical Society.

Is the American Museum of Natural History Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt.

I've visited quite a few museums around New York City, and this is one I'll happily return to. Even after spending several hours exploring, I still didn't see everything, which gives me another reason to come back. Whether you're fascinated by dinosaurs, space, wildlife, gemstones, or world cultures, there's always another incredible exhibit waiting around the corner.

If you're only planning to visit one museum while you're in New York City, this is the one I'd recommend.
