DUMBO
If you’re starting your 24 hours in New York City in Brooklyn, DUMBO is the perfect introduction to the city. This popular waterfront neighborhood is famous for its stunning Manhattan skyline views, historic cobblestone streets, and one of the most photographed spots in New York City.
Brooklyn Bridge
Manhattan Bridge
One of the must-see photo locations is the famous Manhattan Bridge View in DUMBO, where the Manhattan Bridge perfectly frames the street between the red-brick buildings. It’s one of the most iconic NYC Instagram spots and a favorite for first-time visitors.
After taking photos, walk along the waterfront at Brooklyn Bridge Park, where you’ll get some of the best views of the Manhattan skyline and the Brooklyn Bridge. This relaxing park is the perfect place to start your morning in New York before heading toward the bridge to continue your adventure.
Brooklyn Bridge
From DUMBO, one of the best things to do in New York City is to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan, this historic bridge is one of the most iconic landmarks in NYC and one of the best free experiences in the city.
The walk across the bridge takes about 30–40 minutes, and along the way, you’ll enjoy incredible views of the East River and amazing photo opportunities of Lower Manhattan. If you only have one day in New York City, walking the Brooklyn Bridge is one of the best ways to experience the energy of the city while capturing some of the most memorable photos of the NYC skyline.
Subway: Take the F train to York Street or the A/C trains to High Street–Brooklyn Bridge for easy access to DUMBO and the bridges.
Statue of Liberty
No trip to New York City feels complete without seeing the Statue of Liberty, one of the most famous landmarks in the United States. The statue sits on Liberty Island. The only way to visit is by ferry, which also includes access to the Statue of Liberty museum and Ellis Island.
However, if you only have 24 hours in New York City, visiting Liberty Island and Ellis Island can take up a large portion of your day. Traveling between the islands, exploring the museums, and walking around the grounds can easily turn the visit into a half-day experience. Instead, many travelers choose a sightseeing cruise around Lower Manhattan. These boat tours sail through the harbor and provide close-up views of the Statue of Liberty, incredible perspectives of the Manhattan skyline, and a relaxing way to see the city from the water.
You can also catch beautiful views of the Statue of Liberty from several spots in the city, including Brooklyn Bridge Park in DUMBO, the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, and Battery Park in Lower Manhattan.
Subway: Take the 1 train to South Ferry or the 4/5 trains to Bowling Green to reach Battery Park, where ferries depart.

Top of the Rock Observation Deck
For one of the best skyline views in New York City, head to the Top of the Rock Observation Deck at Rockefeller Center. From the observation decks, you’ll get panoramic views of Manhattan, including Central Park and the iconic Empire State Building.
Many visitors actually prefer Top of the Rock over the Empire State Building because you can see the Empire State Building and One World Trade Center in the skyline, making for some of the most classic New York photos.

After visiting the observation deck, take some time to explore Rockefeller Center, one of the most famous areas in Midtown Manhattan near Fifth Avenue and Times Square, 42nd Street.
If you’re visiting during the holiday season, this area becomes especially magical. You’ll find the famous Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, the ice skating rink, and performances at Radio City Music Hall, home of the legendary Rockettes.
Subway: Take the B, D, F, or M trains to 47–50 St–Rockefeller Center, or the N, Q, R, W trains to 49th Street.
Times Square
No first trip to New York City feels complete without experiencing Times Square. Known for its massive digital billboards, bright lights, and nonstop energy, it’s one of the most recognizable places in the world.
As a local, Times Square is honestly a place I usually avoid; it’s crowded, chaotic, and can feel overwhelming. But for first-time visitors, it’s one of those places you have to see at least once. The atmosphere is unlike anywhere else, with flashing lights, street performers, and people from all over the world filling the streets.
Even if you’re short on time, a quick 10–15 minute walk through Times Square is enough to take in the excitement. The area is especially lively at night, when the lights are at their brightest, and the energy of the city really comes to life.
Beyond the lights, Times Square is also a major hub for shopping, dining, and entertainment. You’ll find everything from flagship stores and casual eateries to well-known restaurants and endless things to do. It’s also the gateway to the Broadway Theatre District, making it the perfect place to catch a show after exploring the city.
Another reason it’s such a convenient stop is its accessibility. The Times Square–42nd Street Station is one of the largest subway hubs in New York City, with multiple train lines running through it and easy connections to other major stations nearby. This makes it simple to include in your itinerary, even if you’re only spending a short time in the area.
Subway: The Times Square–42nd Street Station is served by the 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, W, and S trains, with easy connections to nearby lines.
Know Before You Go
Use the subway to save time. The New York City subway is often the fastest way to get around. Download a transit app or use Google Maps for directions between neighborhoods like Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Museums
New York City is home to some of the best museums in the world, but if you only have 24 hours in NYC, it’s best to choose just one so you can still explore the rest of the city. Two excellent options for first-time visitors are the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in Lower Manhattan or the American Museum of Natural History on the Upper West Side.
Both museums offer powerful and memorable experiences, but they provide very different perspectives of the city and its history.
9/11 Memorial & Museum
The 9/11 Memorial & Museum is located in Lower Manhattan, making it a convenient stop after walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. The memorial and museum honor the victims and survivors of the September 11 attacks, the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil.
Outside, visitors can walk around the memorial pools, which sit in the footprints where the original World Trade Center Twin Towers once stood. The outdoor memorial is free to visit and is a powerful and reflective place to pause during your time in the city.
If you choose to visit the museum, it’s best to purchase a timed entry ticket in advance to save time during your 24-hour visit. Afterward, you can take a short walk to Trinity Church, one of the oldest and most historic churches in the city.
Subway: Take the E train to World Trade Center or the 2/3 trains to Park Place for easy access.
American Museum of Natural History
If the 9/11 Museum feels a bit heavy for your trip, another fantastic option is the American Museum of Natural History. Located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, this museum is one of the most famous natural history museums in the world.
The museum takes visitors on a journey through the history of our planet, featuring exhibits on dinosaurs, wildlife, ocean life, human cultures, and even space exploration. It’s a fun and fascinating experience for visitors of all ages.
After your visit, you can walk right across the street into Central Park for a relaxing stroll through one of the most famous parks in the world.
Subway: Take the B or C trains to 81st Street–Museum of Natural History.

New York City is one of the best food cities in the world, and even if you only have one day in NYC, you can still enjoy some amazing meals. From casual food halls to lively dinner spots and cozy brunch restaurants, here are a few great places to add to your itinerary.
Time Out Market New York
Located in DUMBO, Time Out Market New York is a great place to grab lunch while enjoying views of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan skyline. This popular food hall features a variety of local restaurants, making it perfect if everyone in your group wants something different. There is also another Time Out Market location in Union Square, but the DUMBO location is especially convenient if you’re exploring Brooklyn or starting your walk across the bridge.

Tán by Chef Richard Sandoval
For dinner, Tán by Chef Richard Sandoval offers a modern take on Latin cuisine with bold flavors and creative dishes inspired by different regions of Latin America. The menu focuses on simple but flavorful dishes, making it a great place to enjoy a relaxed meal while exploring the city. With several locations across Manhattan, it’s an easy stop whether you're spending time in neighborhoods like SoHo, NoMad, or near Bryant Park.
Subway: Take the B, D, F, or M trains to 42 St–Bryant Park, or the 7 train to 5th Avenue.
Where to Stay in New York City
If you only have 24 hours in New York City, staying somewhere central can make a big difference. Choosing a hotel in a well-connected neighborhood makes it easier to get around the city and reach many of the major attractions quickly.
Three hotels I would recommend looking into are Moxy NYC Lower East Side, Arlo NoMad, and Aloft New York Brooklyn. While I haven’t personally stayed at these hotels, both are in great locations for exploring the city.
The Moxy NYC Lower East Side is located in one of Manhattan’s most energetic neighborhoods, surrounded by great restaurants, bars, and nightlife. If you want to experience the city after dark or explore downtown neighborhoods, this area is a fun place to stay.
Arlo NoMad, on the other hand, is located in Midtown Manhattan, making it a convenient base for first-time visitors. From here, you’re within easy reach of major attractions like Times Square, Empire State Building, and Rockefeller Center, as well as several subway lines that make it easy to get around the city.
If you prefer staying in Brooklyn, Aloft New York Brooklyn is another great option. Located in Downtown Brooklyn, it offers easy subway access to Manhattan and is just a short distance from neighborhoods like Prospect Heights, Park Slope, DUMBO, and Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Arlo NoMad
Subway: Take the B, D, F, M, N, Q, R, or W trains to 34th Street–Herald Square, or the 6 train to 33rd Street.
Moxy NYC Lower East Side
Subway: Take the F train to 2nd Avenue or the J/Z trains to Bowery.
Aloft New York Brooklyn
Subway: Take the A, C, or F trains to Jay Street–MetroTech, or the 2/3 trains to Borough Hall.
Things to Skip If You Only Have 24 Hours in NYC
When you only have 24 hours in New York City, time is your most valuable resource. One of the biggest mistakes visitors make is trying to cover too much ground. New York is huge, and traveling long distances between boroughs can easily take up a large part of your day.
To make the most of your time, it’s best to focus on Manhattan and nearby Brooklyn neighborhoods that are close to major attractions.
Traveling to the Bronx
While the Bronx has incredible attractions like Yankee Stadium and the famous Bronx Zoo, it’s quite far from most of the main sights in Manhattan. If you only have one day in NYC, the travel time there and back may take up several hours that could be spent exploring iconic landmarks closer together.
Visiting Staten Island
Some visitors take the Staten Island Ferry to Staten Island, which does offer great views of the Statue of Liberty. However, if you’re short on time, a sightseeing cruise around Lower Manhattan or views from Battery Park or Brooklyn Bridge Park can give you similar views without taking up as much of your day.
Traveling Out to Long Island
Although Long Island has beautiful beaches and charming towns, it’s not practical for a 24-hour trip to New York City. Travel times can easily take one to two hours each way depending on where you go.
Instead, spend that time exploring neighborhoods closer to the city’s main attractions, such as SoHo, Midtown Manhattan, or Lower Manhattan, where you can experience the energy, food, and famous landmarks that make New York City unforgettable.

While 24 hours in New York City is only a small glimpse of what the city has to offer, it’s still enough time to experience some of its most iconic sights. From walking across the Brooklyn Bridge and exploring DUMBO, to seeing the bright lights of Times Square and taking in skyline views from Top of the Rock Observation Deck, even a single day in the city can be unforgettable.
The key to making the most of one day in NYC is planning your stops by neighborhoods and focusing on a few must-see attractions rather than trying to see everything. Walking through neighborhoods like SoHo, enjoying views of the Statue of Liberty, and visiting a world-class museum such as the 9/11 Memorial & Museum or the American Museum of Natural History will give you a great introduction to the city.
New York is the kind of place that leaves you wanting more. After spending 24 hours in NYC, chances are you’ll already be planning your next trip back!
